What Alex learned: It's a big golf world

It was a big week in the golf world — likely the biggest week left in the 2024 season.
From Prague (Czech Republic) to Leeds (England) to Ayrshire (Scotland) to Memphis (Tennessee) to Chaska (Minnesota), golf was played all around the world with consequences in all these places.
What I learned? There’s a whole world of talent out there as all this golf saw only one American winner.
The D+D Czech Masters was won by David Ravetto from France. The R&A Boys’ and Girls’ Amateurs were played at Moortown and Alwoodley and were swept by two Swedes — Viggo Olsson Mörk and Havanna Torstensson.
At the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama had a volatile finish to win by two shots.
Spain earned its first U.S. Amateur title with José Luis Ballester, a 2-up winner over American Noah Kent.
Only 31-year-old Lauren Coughlin posted a win for the Americans last week at the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open.
She’s not a household name, but Coughlin is on a bit of a run.
After finishing fourth at the Amundi Evian Championship, Coughlin won the CPKC Women’s Open in Canada for her first win on the LPGA Tour. Then she followed up a solid T9 in the Portland Classic with another international win at Dundonald Links in Scotland.
In that four-tournament run, all 16 of Coughlin’s rounds have been under par, with a scoring average of 68.
Oddly, both the American’s wins occurred outside of the U.S. She can try to extend that foreign soil winning streak in this week’s AIG Women’s Open on the Old Course at St. Andrews.
With this hot streak, Coughlin climbed to third on the Team USA points list for the Solheim Cup and is assured of playing at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in September for the Red, White & Blue.
“It’s kind of unbelievable,” Coughlin said after her second win. “Two in three weeks is pretty crazy … or three events. But I just kind of stuck in there, tried to stay as present as I could, and got some putts to drop at the end.”
